85 spree wont stay running

Post by davexdm9 »

Hello , just got an 85 spree from a family member. It has not been started for quite some time. This is what ive done so far. fresh fuel. dissassembled and cleaned carb think a got all the small ports in the carb open now.new plug. This is what it does. Scooter will start but die. Longest it has run is like 20- 30 seconds. acts like it is running out of fuel. if you pull the fuel line off the carb while cranking the engine fuel spurts out in pulses like the fuel pump is working. I manage to flood out the engine once and after it started it revved up and ran but just untill the fuel was gone. The bowl always has fuel in it when i open the drain on the bottom. Im lost . I have not checked the compression but it will suck your hand to the carb inlet when running so i dont think thats an issue. it just acts like its running out of fuel and dies. but it seems that its always got fuel in the bowl so i dont know. any ideas ?

Clean the carb again and pay special attention to the idle jet. Its the smaller tube that sticks down next to the main jet. If you're using carb spray then make sure its spraying cleanly through before reassembling.

First off there is no fuel pump, this is a gravity feed system. However the vacuum pulses to the petcock are slow while cranking and the fuel flow will be interrupted like you have.

I would suspect that the idle circuit orifice is still plugged and the engine is starting on the bystarter fuel but it is not sufficient to keep the engine going.

Re: 85 spree wont stay running, now no top end

Ok thanks it was the small tube in the bowl, completly gummed up. it runs now even got to ride it . now it loses power at wot. it will take off ok but once you get to about 20mph and you open it wide open it will fall on its face , back off to half or 3/4 throttle and it picks up again. it will run about 25 on flat ground hit 30 on a big downhill any ideas now, how fast should it run ?

do a plug chop. Put a new spark plug in. Run it wide open throttle for a while, Hit the kill switch and the brakes, and check the spark plugs color

You do have the stock air box with filter in place right?

Im having the same issue as the op. Starts but dies. I opened up the airbox and tossed in some quick start in small bursts and that way it keeps running.

How to you make a difference between a clogged carburator and an air leak? and without dissassembly.

Starting fluid is a NO-NO for 2 strokes. First off there is no oil in the ether to lube the engine and on top of that the ether washes what oil is on the internal engine parts off causing metal to metal contact with no lube. You can also have an explosion in the crankcase with ether, it does NOT burn, it explodes, and if you do have a crankcase blast you reeds will be gone and the engine can not start. If you want to prime a 2 stroke engine, use 50 to 1 premix and use an squirt bottle or oil can to spray it into the motor.

Your idle circuit in the carb is plugged up. Clean per instructions in Wikispreedia.
