84 Honda Spree Fuel Cuts Out Around 25MPH

I just got my '84 Spree up and running, and originally thought that after I got to 25mph, the rev limiter was kicking in, until I read that the American Spree has no rev limiter.

I have a clean carb and petcock, the engine runs smooth, I suck on the vacuum line and gas flows out of the gas line until I stop sucking on it.

When it gets up to 25mph it's like the gas cuts out. If I keep the throttle all the way open, after it gets under 25, it accelerates pretty hard back up to 25mph, and then the gas cuts out again. I have no idea what is causing this. I hope I can get this resolved so I can go a bit faster, cause it seems like there is plenty of power left when it accelerates back up to 25mph.

Any thoughts on the subject?

you may need to clean the main jet emulsion tube, around 3/4 to full throttle is controlled by the main jet. take the carb apart and take a wooden or plastic rod and stick it through the top where the slide goes in and tap the brass tube out through the bottom and clean that holes in the tube out and make sure the main jet itself is free of obstructions. dont use anything metal to tap the brass out or you may damage it, i use a chop stick

I've thoroughly cleaned the carb.

i would try the above option first but if that doesnt work look at your coil.it could be breaking down(going bad)my spree was doin this at about 30 mph then got worse and did it at 25 until i put on a new coil.

if you didnt tap out the main emulsion tube then you havent entirely cleaned it, those tiny holes in it get powerdery white corrosion pretty easy and you would never know unless you remove it. I know the carb cleaning and tuning is a pain in the * for sure, I cannot relate to you how many times i have taken these carbs apart to change jets and needles trying to tune them in, if any of the jets are clogged then all your efforts are wasted. if you are certain it is clear then the problem may be in your ignition system like dude says I hope you get it running right I know how irritating it can be too bad you dont have any spare parts you can test with. the manual can be downloaded in the documents section of this forum with the correct resistance readings to test the coil and cdi all you need is a multimeter

Does it shut off like the switch is shut off or does it sputter and then slow down?

It doesn't do either of those. It just seems like the fuel cuts out and decelerates, then accelerates hard when it's under 25, until it reaches 25 again.

i was wondering the same thing bear ask because if its not sputtering its prob your coil cutting out.i had a spare to test mine.mine would cut out at 25 or 30 and if u stayed on the gas after 3 or 4 sec it would kick in again.

Idk. I checked all my connections. make sure coil and spark plug have a good connection. I checked my connections, and have had no problem since.

In for same problem, but I gotta get my carb retapped where I stripped it. (and yeah, I cleaned emulsion tube too). Then I will test it.

does it make a difference if your going uphill/downhill

if 25 is the same limit either way, its your coil

Unless you tested those items per the service manual, YOU have not tested them.
