Permanently bypass the petcock

Post by cefarjv »

1987 se50

keeps dying on me after full throttle and returning to idle. petcock works, but may need too much vacuum to open it. I can replace it for 60 bucks, or bypass it all together. float needle is working fine.

any ideas/thoughts? is petcock really crucial?

I would put money on it that your petcock is fine. If it is getting fuel at idle, then the petcock is working. It sounds like your problem lies in the carb.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with better diagnose info in a few.

Run it on an alternate fuel supply to rule out the petcock and strainer.

I'm a believer in a leak free petcock and a perfect float valve seal. Former is crucial for safety, latter can make the carb perform poorly, along with taking away a failsafe for a leaking petcock.

There are manual valves which will fit up to your tank, or an inline petcock could be added. On the manual petcock side, the offshore petcock 'taz and Six66 found for Gyros should fit, but measure threads to be sure.

thank you, i might go with that option.

As for a replacement for the current style petcock, has anyone used an "ebay" model? Are they of decent quality or should i get a honda oem?

went with that on/off (fuel valve #11) petcock from kazumausaonline. fit right up, fixed the issue. blocked the vacuum line and this scoot is running great again.
