how to bolt on oil pump
Trying to get my Aero back on the road again. The oil pump has wiggled loose and what originally secured it has been eaten by the road.
I have had some help from some very nice forum members and obtained the bolt and nut and what i think is the oil pump set plate
but i cant quite figure out how it holds it in place. cant find any clear pictures in the service manual. heres some pics of what i got going on. my pump, the bolt i got from mystic, and the plate from brandsnscars. thanks again guys.

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
I think that plate is for the af16, not sure what, if any difference there is between the 2
here is the diagrahm showing the set plate, the one you have looks to be like the one in the picture. the bolt i sent you holds the pump to the crankcase and the other spot it bolts is to the top bolt that holds the starter on

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
Greetings:
I'm pretty sure the set plates work with either block.
I think you need to rotate the pump 90 degrees to the left. Then the L-shaped "tongue" that's in the middle of your palm just sits atop the pump, pressing it down. There are bolt-holes in 2 planes, one of which uses the hex bolt and nut in the vertical plane. The thin nut slides into the slot cast into the engine crankcase. The other bolt-hole uses one of the starter bolts(?) or one right near it in the horizontal plane. That leaves the tang with the "split" hole pointing West to cradle the pump's cable.
Clear as Mud?

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
then again you have an 85 aero which is different from 86 and 87, that set plate is for either 86-87 aero or af16 not sure if it will fit. the plate for the 85 is different since the 85 pump only has one mixture ratio as opposed to later models that had the cable adjusted mixture. maybe it will bolt on there if not you may have to make something if the bolt itself wont hold it down

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
ok looking at the diagram it seems pretty clear i have the 86/87 pump set plate
which turns out to be different than the 85 crankcase plate
so i guess i need to get or rig that that set plate dang.

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
you could get a flat piece of metal and drill a hole in it to fit the screw through then bend it so that it fits to hold the pump down and screw it tight

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
yeah i might end up trying something like that if i can figure out where it holds it down.
the plate for the 85 is much simpler so maybe i could rig something.
the oil pump itself has a different part number in the 85 than in the 86 /87 as well
in theory would a oil pump from the 86/87 work in the 85 crankcase? Is this a possible
upgrade for the 85, is that pump and set plate improved in some way in the 86/87 you think?

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
there is a bolt that goes through that plate then through the shroud that covers the top end.
Re: how to bolt on oil pump
smasher is right look at the first two pics on this post to get a better idea

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
Nice pics finally can se the piece i'm missing. i know where the plate bolts to the shroud
but i'm not sure how it holds the oil pump down. doesnt seem to bolt on.

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
Greetings:
Yes I believe the cable-controlled '86-later pumps could be an upgrade to an '85 build.
The '86-later split cables as well as a the cable holder would be needed to make it all work. I am not so sure the later set plates fit the '85 cases - sorry for incorrect advice above. I had forgotten about how different the '85 block was.

Re: how to bolt on oil pump
it only hase one bolt (through the shroud). the plate just pushes on the pump to hold it in place.
Re: how to bolt on oil pump
okay i think i see how it might go. i see a groove that looks like a piece can slide into it
no worries wheels i appreciate the help cant win em all
ok i think i have rigged it up to where i think it might be all right. had to
remove the hose that goes from the oil pump to the crankcase to get it in secure.
reattached the hose. is there some trick to bleeding the air out before i start it?

Ok seems to be doing the job for now. back on the road, no bystarter but after the first start, its starting right up. prob keep my eye out for one eventually and the right oil plate. i'll post a pic later of my hack job. thanks for all the help on this one, stupid little thing but it really had me stumped.
