Kick Start not engaging

Hey all,

As always, big shout out to you guys for the continued help throughout restoring and fixing up my 86 Spree. Always helpful and on point, much thanks!

So, my current conundrum is this. When I use the kick start, it feels and sounds like its not engaging the motor all of the way. It will turn it over partially, but continued attempts result in "spoon stuck in disposal" sound and the engine will not turn over.

I can "reset" the situation by manually turning the exhaust fan back a few revolutions.

I generally try to think up a solution, followed by some hard core board searching before succumbing to posting :) Does anyone have any pointers on where to start? My brain has slowly developed "Honda Spree" lock :)

Happy holidays!

VERY common problem with this model. You will have to replace the kicker gears. You'll see whats broken when you take off the cover.

The kick start gears look good, and they actuate the the driven gear. It "feels" like the driven gear is slipping on the drive pulley. Kinda hard to look confirm that :)

Greetings:

The outer pulley teeth - six of them - should be square on the counterclockwise side of a Spree. Careless kicking without pausing to make sure the spindle engages these teeth can cause them to become rounded over and then they won't stay engaged. A new outer pulley would fix if the spindle teeth are still square.

Hi Tom,

It appears that your outer sheaves half has rounded teeth. The kickstart gear is just slipping instead of engaging and rotating the crank.

I should still be able to turn the bike over with the electric start correct? I don't anticipate any problems there, even with the worn down kick.

Your electric start uses another gear, so you should be fine.

just be wary that the battery don't die on yah when relying only on the electric starter to start up your moped, which is why I recommend getting the kick start in working order when you can.

The hook on the spring that hooks to the gear looks broke, and it`s on the wrong side of the shaft.

Spring is on the correct side of the half moon gear. The spree kicks forward, the opposite direction as the elite because it has a single reduction gear box.
