Question about crankshaft removal

Post by devenex »

I'm working on rebuilding an af05 from a '85 Aero after removing the top end and finding broken rings.

I used a steering wheel puller to get the case split, but not sure how to how to get the crank out of the left case half. I have the tusk crank puller on order, but it hasn't arrived yet. Would that be what I would use or do I knock it out w/ a rubber mallet?

OK.

How does the puller get the crank out? How do I give it the leverage to do that since it doesn't appear to have any means of threading into the block?

It bolts to the case and then pushes the crank out.

Hey Bear, do have any pics of how this is done? I don't have my tool in hand but i don't see how it bolts to the case and how it pushes the crank. Maybe i can find something online.

This is the only thing i found, not using the Tusk but looks like it would work good.

That's pretty much it. The plate blots to the case and the center screw pushes the crank out as you screw it in.

I see, i was under the impression we were talking about the Tusk crank installer bolting to the block. Carry on.

An installer just screws on to the end of the crank and you screw out the center screw and it pulls the crank into the block.

The tusk puller will not help you take the crank out.

Smack it with a rubber mallet to get it out :2thumbs:

If the bearings stay on the crank.....you may need a bearing puller to remove them.

Please explain why this is bad advice.

Every crank I have ever removed has been with a rubber mallet.

I do not recommend installing the crank with a mallet.

But for removing the crank from the case , it seems to be the best way with out buying a special tool from honda.

Niftyman is giving advice on a procedure that he has not ever done. :eyeroll:

I have used the Tusk tool to remove the crank, i just did a few weeks back and did it on my "stealth" build. Never had a problem. I'm not recommending it but it's what worked for me.

I like the idea of using the wood block and puller tool to "push" the crank out better. This is the procedure i will use from now on.

I am not now nor have I ever been a fan of using a hammer of any kind on a pressed together crank shaft.

I agree that using a hammer to pound across a pressed crank is a bad idea.

But pounding out a crank that is stuck in the case does not put stress on any of the pressed fittings in the crank.

Does this make sense?
