How rusty is too rusty

Im in the process of cleaning all the old rust from my tank and i was wondering if every last spec of it has to be taken off. Id say 85-90% is back to silver. Ive done 2 clr treatments. Should i do a third one? Im gonna snap some pics

I would do my best to get it all because if anything flakes off after you reassemble and get going, you have another potential problem to worry about.

A properly installed petcock has a filter on it, so a flake or two of rust should never reach the petcock. Enough flacks to clog the filter is an issue though.

Just an FYI: I read in another forum that some scooters/carburetors don't like inline fuel filters because they can cause issues. Keep that in mind if you decide to use one.

Are you shaking BBs in your gas tank along with the CLR to help break the rust loose? If not, you should do one more treatment with some BBs - they work wonders.

Known about and dealt with here. Honda makes an inline filter for the Aero 125. PN 16910-GB2-900 that will feed the 125 engine so a 50 cc engine will not have an issue. Or you use the stone filters for small engines. I use the Honda one. It is only $8.00 list and they sell me mine for $5.50.

Once upon a time those cone-o-stone filters as you call them were VERY reliable and caused no problems. Then along came gasohol. It almost ruined the company. They did reformulate and they work well with just about any crappy gas you can flow through them. Of course being plastic they still can be damaged by some of the wacky "snake oil" fuel additive products.

So you used CLR to clean the tank? Were you impressed with the results? Do you have any pics? I have to clean a tank soon, and I didn't see CLR listed on this page: (I am considering the slower vinegar method)

On my scoot I have two inline filters installed. My gas tank also had a ton of rust in it after sitting for 20+ years with a tank half full of gas. I have had absolutely no problems with eithe rof those filters. It runs just fine. So if there is any problems with inline filters on these mopeds (honda 2 strokes namely), i haven't had any nor have i heard a thing about problems with them until now.
