Ran into a small snag. The previous owner of my motor stripped the threads out of one of the gear cover bolt holes. Is it better to retap or heli coil a new tread in?

Aluminum threads when in contact with a steel screw threads always loose, even when you retap them. Heli-coils makes the threads steel to steel.

Why would you say that?
Volvo Marine uses heli-coils in all their aluminum castings brand new equipment from the factory.

Do your research!
I don't have to research nothing. I personally have installed hundreds if not thousands of heli-coils and it is not brain surgery. In fact none of them are.

Never, ever had a properly instaled heli-coil come out or the bolt screwed into it.
