Bad Petcock, challenged Needle

While technically the Needle's job is to hold back the gas, it doesn't take much to overcome it's shut-off capabilities. I'd do a quick check of the petcock by removing the line going to the carb (not the vacuum line) and if it flows freely, just buy a new petcock and see if your problem goes bye bye.

That's a good tip to run at least seasonally. Petcock is a safety for a float needle failure.
