Hooking up engine tachometer for tuning?

My engine tach only has provisions for 8, 6, and 4 cylinders. If I select the 4, should I divide the reading by 4 to get the correct rpms? Just wondering because the manual says to attach a tachometer and I've never seen a 1 cylinder tach before.

You can get a 1 cyl. tach for a race kart. Their kinda expensive as mentioned.
MyChron (http://aimsports.com) and Digatron (http://digatron.cc) make good ones. They can read your engine temp and everything.

The tach you get also depends on if your engine is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke, not just the # of cylinders.

doesn't matter 2 or 4 stroke, 4 srtoke cart motor still fires on the exhaust stroke, the tach monitors ignition fire.
