84 honda spree starter disengaging

Found a good 84 spree, the only thing wrong was the starter was weak/bad.....i changed it out with a 85 spree starter and i can get it started with it but sometimes it doesnt engage and it just spins, and most of the other times it engages a couple of rotations and disengages.....anyone have that problem before and how did you fix it.....thanks for the help

Likely, you have the wrong starter for the bendix part. Spree starters are different thru the years how many teeth on your original versus the new one?

also check your bendix i had one that was similar to your problem replaced it with one in better condition and it was good to go.

Is there a way to check the bendix without taking the side cover off? The bendix is the part that the starter rotates on/against right? What i mean is the starter goes trough a hole and rests against a sprocket in te side cover....that piece right? Sorry i am new to sprees and how they work

Just take the side cover off and inspect it lol its like 6 bolts....
