Need assist - 1986 Iowa Spree troubleshooting

Post by PolarIce »

I'm not a newbie but I need advice.

The carb is clean (6 times over).
I have seen the pin * of light.
All of the holes are clear.
New air filter.

Here is the symptoms - it will stumble start but won't idle.

If I hand choke the carb inlet it will fire up, rev up and with some dexterity I can get it to idle.

As soon as I stop the choking it will run for a little while then die same thing happens if I quickly reassemble the air box.

So... What am I missing?

Jetting?
Clogged exhaust?

Lean or rich?

I am at 5000 feet.

Your advice is welcome.

Petcock is working good. No intake leaks that I can tell.

I guess I will do the campfire exhaust burn.

If it was mine I would take out the air/fuel jet and blow it out then do the same for the tube and the tiny port in the throttle tube. If you crank the engine and you can feel air pumping through it, the muffler is not the cause of it not starting. Also, at 5000ft you might want to change the main jet down to a 65.
