Update on '85 Spree fix-up

Post by spree13 »

Got the 85 torn down as far as it needs, the motor and trans are on the bench, here's what I found.
Bypassing oil inj., going with premix.
Air box lid full of holes. good one coming from Paul.
Carb to air box boot missing. Ditto Paul.
Vacuum fuel valve missing. Again Paul.
Air filter element missing. New one from Honda.
No exhaust donut, silicone yuck! New one from Honda
Drive belt large chunks missing. New one from Honda.
Starter motor toast. Ebay one on the way.
Battery toast. Local purchase.
Fuel gauge doesn't work and panel is yucky. E-bay purchase on the way.
Bendix missing & it starts with a drill. 8O Reinstalled bendix and putting back to stock!
Otherwise just a thorough cleaning and some "custom" painting! Grabber green muffler  I'll deal with the fuel gauge not working later as the new gauge panel is just a guess. I hope that the carb will only need cleaning and readjusting after I return the air box and vacuum fuel valve back to stock. The motor feels tight and has good compression. It ran well past idle before with double oiling and NO filtration system at all! 8O I removed the signals as half of them were broken and didnt work right. Don't need them & it looks better w/o them. Looks like I'll have about $325 in it when I get it done. Not too bad for a toy for the wife!
Thanks for everyones help and replies! So far!

Haha, nice. BTW holes in the airbox are not always so good. You may experiment with them but it will make the spree a lot louder.

Definately get a new air box cover, the ones with holes make it extremely loud and cause the engine to run lean, causing ring damage. Be sure to get a #65 jet in your carburetor, it is the best one for the spree.

I figure that since I don't know what has been done to this Spree I will return it to as close to stock as I can and go from there. I'm sure I'll be back into the carb at least for some adjustments when I get done fixing all the "Southern Ingenuity" mods that have been done to this poor little scooter! I'll have nearly as much money in parts to redo this Spree as I paid for it.
Thanks again guys! I'm sure I'll have more questions later!

Your gonna have a new Spree before too long. BTW, does anyone know how much these Sprees were brand new?
I try to fix things with a hammer and wrench!

Sounds like you're well on your way to getting it set up right. I'll look forward to pics of the Grabber Green Spree.
