Well I still haven't been able to correctly assemble my kick starter. Just completely lost at this point and ready to take it in to the honda dealer to get it fixed

It's been awhile since i had one apart.
You might need to unhook it from the gear, put spring into place and then use screwdriver to hook it back onto the gear after gear is in place. It can be tricky, good luck!

The spring hooks right on the half-moon, in that notch. The hole isn't for the spring end.
Once you have everything clean and Greased (NOT Oil!), insert the shaft through the hole in the cover, and Temporarily install the kick lever on the shaft. This gives you a handle with some leverage over the spring tension. The Service manual is pretty detailed in its assembly sequence description. P
