2000 Honda elite sr moped slow on start up take off

Post by okrueger183 »

Hi all,

So my 2000 Honda Elite SR moped (2700 miles) has always had the problem of slow, bogged down take offs for nearly as long as I've owned it. To sum it up, the problem goes something like this:

Start up, idle just fine, take off, THEN I need to apply 3/4 throttle I'd say to get it over an acceleration hump (thats the best way I can word it). It is bogged down, but slowly slowly increases rpm and speed till finally around 15 mph and after 3-4 seconds it suddenly breaks out of its funk and runs just fine. To note, this is ONLY on cold start up and take off, and happens EVERY time. If I warm it up and let it sit (turned off) for say 30 min and try again there is no slow bogged down period of initial acceleration. Once your over the "hump" your over it until you let it sit long enough to cool completely.

I've very recently:
-Cleaned the carb very thoroughly (twice)
-ran several tanks of fresh fuel through
-changed spark plugs
-cleaned air filter
-ran synthetic oil

None of these things have made any difference regarding this problem.

Any ideas???? Carb adjustments with the fuel mixture or something perhaps?
Any insightful input is much appreciated!!!!

Thanks

Possibly the bystarter?

I, too, am thinking it could be the bystarter (electric choke). They have to be checked quite carefully, including the wires & connections.

So you think the best way to check on its status would be to follow its connections and make sure that everything is making solid contact? I've had it off of my carb the two times I cleaned it, but never paid too much special attention to it really.

Sounds good, I read through the section on the bystarter. Some good info there. I'll try out some of those avenues and go from there.
