Compression test

Post by bushpigwillie »

What does a 30 psi compression test say to you on a Spree? I intend to tear down the motor and sort it out as this should be at 113 psi, but I was just curious on ya'll's thoughts.

The engine turns over smoothly and I get partial combustion as it smokes when turning over the engine.

90 psi to run is the general consensus.

Greetings:

Stuck rings are possible. Also bad crank seal(s) hole in the piston, or maybe bad reeds, in any combination. You must hold the throttle wide open - or remove the carb from the manifold - to get an accurate CR.

Right. Throttle was wide open reeds were checked and good. I'm hoping just stuck rings because when I found it in this ladys garage, the gas in the carb bowl was like molasses.

Well, you are taking the head and the cylinder off anyway, so you'll find out. These are really easy engines to work on. If you didn't already do it, you might just take the engine right out of the frame and put it on a workbench. Save your back and much easier to get everything done.

Well.....my first experience with Harbor Frieght inferior quality. The compression tester I picked up there reads 30 psi on the project spree so I tested it on my known good daily driver and it also read 30 psi. So it gets returned to Harbor Freight. Any suggestions on a decent compression tester?

I'm still gonna teardown the top end and go through it so I guess I'll get started on the teardown without knowing the compression.

Greetings:

HF changed vendors for their compression testers, so the new ones may indeed suck. The one I got 3 years ago works fine, UNLESS I try to use the "Adaptor". There's no need for it as the fitting on the tester's hose fits the plug hole anyhow. But it reads really low with the adaptor, evidently due to increased dead space.

I'm more than happy to explain it to you. I'll even draw you a picture! But I can't understand it for you.
