Hard starting spree solution.

Post by fairlead »

Working on my 84 Iowa today I discovered someone ripped the bystarter apart when the needle stuck in the cup. I gotta find a new one. Anyway, eager to ride I took a primer bulb off a tecumseh-engined snowblower (black with hole in the center) and plugged it onto the top nipple of the carb (the vent that is partially covered by the cylinder shroud. The hole for carb adjustment in the body worked nice to mount the bulb. Two primes, and away old balky~starter goes! Try it...............

Yes, tomorrow I'll take a pic and post it. Nice solution. Known several of these that were iffy starters. No mods necessary.

Here's some photos I took of primer retrofit to spree carb. I am just tickled with how well this works. These primers can be had from any tecumseh 2 or 4 stroke snowblower. Be sure it has the hole in the center for proper carb ventilation. Mounting on the outside of bike is convenient, two quick jabs usually does the trick, sending two nice pulses of fuel up the main jet into the carb throat.

That primer is awesome except... you will need to address the huge leak in the carb from the the missing by starter. A new by starter is as cheap as a primer bulb.

I had enough pieces of bystarter to plug the hole up. The inner plunger needle thingy was mangled. I'm guessing the aftermarket chinese bystarters on ebay are good performers? I still may leave the primer on this one, kind of my "pickup truck".

As long as the the needle is down in the hole and the rest blocked up should be good :-D there is supposed to be a way to make the by starter needle to stay down all the way easily, that would make the primer install a perfect fix if you can't wait for a by starter to arrive, as primer bulbs are available at the corner hardware store and you could get back on the road quick. I might add a primer just for the heck of it

All I know is my, and numerous other customers with sprees have griped about their machine not starting after not riding for a few days, and this fix seems to be the magic arrow. I hope some of ya'll without the ability to buy a new bi~starter find this helpful. CAN anyone tell me if the bystarters offered on ebay for cheap are an acceptable replacement for my disemboweled original?????????

Believe at 10 bucks this comes via the slow boat from Chinatown.
I'm more than happy to explain it to you. I'll even draw you a picture! But I can't understand it for you.

That's why I'm thinking of doing that primer add on if I leave my spree sit for long periods sometimes it takes a bit to get it to fire up. Not lately but has in the past, so an inexpensive primer bulb is in my future for sure. That primer is brilliant dude :-)
