Some advice please ? I think it's heat related

Hey folks
I have been playing around with my '83 Aero80
slowly getting it better
had a CR80 carb on it, with a homemade intake
got rid of all that and put on a 24mm OKO with the new shiney intake and everything
right now, only the jets that it came with a 45 and a 107
i have some larger mains, but the smaller mains are on order
As i understand i should be running a 98 or somewhere around there

i am getting a new belt in the next few days as well, would be putting it on today, but may not go out in the rain

i had the red cone filter on the carb (the one it came with)
and found the other day in the rain, it got water logged and died on me
so i went back to the foam unifilter i had on the old carb (but haven't riden too much in the rain since then)
what i am finding now, is after about 10-15 minutes of riding the bike starts to bog down really bad
if i shut it off for ten minutes, it's fine again, for a bit

can you guys give me some ideas of what i can try to fix this ?
i saw a few threads here talking about taping off the filter to restrict the air, i had almost assumed i wasn't getting enough air because i had a 107 main jet, but now that i think about it, i wonder if that's part of my problem

also, when i got it, it had no inner fender or heat covers on the engine or anything
so i have some heat floating around in the backend i wonder if that is affecting things as well
but would have thought cooler would be better, should i remove the one shroud i do have ?

any ideas you folks could share would be great
I have very limited funds, so purchasing more parts is out of the questions currently
but night be able to figure out something in a pinch (fab some plastic ?)

put all the heat shrouds back on or it will over heat

i don't have the heat shrouds
I got the bike post-modded
no inner fender, no heat shrouds

i would have thought, no heat shrouds would allow more air and cool better ?

+1 - Do you have all the shrouds?

i have the shroud that goes over the alt and blows up onto the engine
not the top one, nor the inner fender

With the big carb, cone filter, etc it will be running VERY hot. It'll be worse without the plastic shroud around the cylinder since that's how the jug is cooled.

If it seizes, the piston will likely melt on the sides and score the cylinder. This is risky; you can run without the shroud, but only very slowly, prefer without the outer body plastic. Otherwise everything will self-destruct eventually.

I taped off my cone filter to restrict the air
seemed to help a bit, killed my top end at first
changed my plug back to a 6, and changed my weights and seemed to get quite a bit better
it doesn't feel nearly as hot from the hole cut in my body
the one cover does help to blow some air across it

but i'll have to take it for a longer ride today and see how it does
i will start hunting for the shroud and see what i can come up with

Greetings:

Bring a cellphone on that longer ride. Running without all the shrouds in place is just about a guaranteed seize. Don't do it.

it would probably explain why it was running so rich when i got it
i'll start hunting and see what i can find

Don't mess with the filter get the shrouds figured out and then tune the carb correctly. The whole reason for a 24mm carb and new intake is to let the motor breathe more air and fuel to make more power. No point in restricting the filter to richen the mixture just jet it up the way it needs. A cylinder head temp gauge is a worthwhile investment at this point and almost a necessary thing really then you won't be guessing at how the temps are doing you will know for sure. I've read that the lager carb and intake along with a few other things will make the aero 80 do 50mph, but not if you melt it down first ;-)

yeah, i don't want to melt it down !
what kind of heat gauge do i need to get ?

i will hunt for the shrouds too, i am not sure were to look yet

the jet right now is 107, too big i think, i have some smaller ones on the way

I'd grab one of the trail tech CHT with 14mm sensor, and grab a nice long extension for the sensor so it will reach to the dash of the scooter. Treatland.TV has everything you need.hard to say what you need for jetting as the carb is quite large. You never know you may in the ball park but with the shrouds missing its going to be hard to tell as you don't want to be doing wot plug chops with out shrouds in place. Stock carb is 35 pilot and 88 main and the best jet for stock is the 90 anyway. At least a 95 i would think is going to be the smallest you would want to start. Some of the guys who run the larger carbs on 80cc bores will def. have some more insight on jetting than me for this.

i will be ordering that heat gauge soon
I had a question
Currently my carb is running a #107 Main Jet
Could i up jet it and help counter the extra air ?
I have jets from 80-130 in various sizes, which would be a better size to go with ?
