I was cruising down the road at maxed out speed. Probably 55mph on an ever so slight down grade. All of the sudden I lost power. I stopped and it idled fine. It wouldn't go WOT for about 5 minutes when all of the sudden it came back to life. Today I rode it to work and it ran just fine. What do you guys think for possible causes?

Could be some gunk was passing through your main jet, I would check the carb bowl for sure.

you may have had a soft Seiz... do you have a temp gage???

Both devenex and swimmingfree have really good theories , could be either one. I would check both things out, carb and cylinder. I'm leaning towards the soft seize side of the fence. Are you running a stock setup on whatever scooter it is? I'd check the airbox, filter and carb connection if it is a stock setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But if soft seize was the problem it would have had different symptoms. It would idle fine but couldn't give it full throttle for a fee minutes. It idled like nothing was wrong

I think you have a fuel delivery problem. Probably a vapor lock from the tank vent. Run it with the cap loose and see if you have the same problem.

maybe some carbon got jammed up in the exhaust.

or rust clogged the fuel filter.

Fuel petcock, dirty carb, high temps can also cause power loss and hesitation

Sounds like a fuel problem. We're there any strange noises when you experienced the power loss?

I vote for soft seize, especially if you were running without an air filter, for example. It'll easily overheat to the point of seizing at 55mph downhill. If you had a CHT temp gauge, you'd see the CHT go through the roof as you started downhill. The mixture goes lean as you close the throttle going down hill. That's what 2-strokes do. If you're lucky, it'll start and idle right away, but do this one or two times more and it'll seize "real good".

You maxed out the oil pump that caused a lean burn, change your gear ratio and beef up the clutch, lower rpms= the engine will last longer...
