Aero 125 needs help!!

Post by Tannera »

.... quick history.... got an 88 Elite, wouldn't stay running, replaced the fuel valve and the bystarter, and it runs like a charm......

I just picked an Aero up about a month ago. I've been tinkering with it, and still can't get it running! It started when I looked at it, but wouldn't stay running. It rode home with me in a trailer for a 3 hour drive, and now it won't even start.

It cranks fine. It holds 100 lbs of compression. The spark appears very weak though. Changed plugs, made sure cap was screwed in, I've even sprayed starter fluid into the carb. Nothing. I've tried swapping some parts from the currently running Elite, but nothing seems to get the Aero to start.

Do you have any ideas??? I know I'm going to replace the fuel valve and most likely the bystarter.... but I'd like to get the darn thing to fire!

Also, if you know of a supplier that has parts, that would be a huge help. I'd like to get this bike running so I can ride it and my grandson can ride the Elite.

I'm drawing a blank at the moment. I own Aero 125 too.
100 #'s psi compression should start and run, plus you said it ran when purchased.
My first thought when you said it won't fire on starting fluid was to check the reeds for damage.
A weak spark is possible cause too...I use a Snap-On spark tester.
Often times spark will not look very good when observed in daylight.
Switching coils for a known-good one is the common and easiest way to eliminate that.
Check inside the airbox for filter. That sucker is no longer available from Honda, but
is easy to fabricate. Still, the thing should start/fire without one.
Every scooter that has been dormant for any time whatsoever will need a carb cleaning.
The bystarter has a well that is integrated into the float bowl, and this well is fed gas from bowl through a teeny hole into the side of that well.
Make sure that hole is open, as well as all the jets and idle/air mixture screw passage.
Carb cleaning is tedious, somewhat technical, and absolutely essential to achieve proper tuning.
Spray cans are useful for verifying the status of the passages once they have been soaked, prodded, and blown fiercely with compressor.
Berryman's Chem Dip is the best I've used in one gallon cans for ~$20
I leave you with those thoughts and wish you good luck... :urban:

Edit : parts are mostly NLA from Honda and parts scooters are not easily found.

Thanks! I will have to check the reeds. I already tried swapping the coil for the one that works on my Elite. I got a pm from somebody that said the Aero should have compression of 169 psi. If that is the case, I'll prob have to start scouring the web for rings. What do you think?

The spark still looks weak, most of the time the plug is wet. LOL

LOL, nope, not scooter speed (but it could be if I get this one going!)

OK, put the warm, dry plug in the scoot... does not start. Little spark. Wet when taken out and put back in Elite.

Starting to think it may be the low compression...
