speedometer and weird sounds

Post by kingofsouls »

Okay so as I go to school today my 86 Honda spree starts making these weird, I guess deadly sounds. It's hard to describe but they are loud and they cause the speedometer to wig out. performance from my point of view isn't actually affected but I'm worried it muight be serious and cause problems. Another thing to mention is that the sound has been occurring about a week about, but they usually only last a second or two.

Today it was for 20 miles.

My theory is that it's the cold weather: it only started when the temperature dropped.

Any suggestions?

Yes, the cold temperatures will cause speedometer cables to "scream".
The answer to the problem is = clean and lube... :urban:

There is a star gear inside the front brake hub that needs to be greased every yr. all of my speedo cables are original and need no lube!
some people dream of speed, i own your dreams!

While the gears in the front hub assembly do require occasional lubrication,
the original poster's scenario clearly points toward a dry, cold cable that is causing un-natural noises.
The gears have little chance of producing any audible sound,
but dry, cold speedometer cables are extremely likely to emit sounds much like a cat with it's tail caught in a ringer.

There's also a bushing in the base of some Honda speedos that will scream in a high pitched squeak. You have to oil it.
