No Spark on DIO, CDI?

Post by el_walto »

Last night ran my scooter without a battery, I guess that was a really bad idea. Yes im a n00b. This morning it has no spark.

I have a brand new one day old battery.
Rear light works fine.
Fuse is fine.
Ignition Coil Continuity test > OK resistance as per service manual
Alternator Exciter Coil > OK resistance as per service manual
Alternator Pulse Generator > OK resistance as per service manual

Should i now order a new CDI? Or is their more parts to test?

Looks like i can get a CDI for $17.50 shipped from ebay

Check with a new plug first gapped to .025" recheck the wiring. Abreen89 has new cdi boxes if your is toast. Prob quicker than ebay

Inst the kill switch inline with the rear light? Rear light works fine.

And the battery doesn't have anything to do with spark unless you are only using the electric start and its not charged up enough to spin the motor over fast enough to get it to fire properly. Been there done that.

Ignition Switch\key switch Tested to CDI > OK
Rear light works fine.
Fuse is fine.
Ignition Coil Continuity test > OK resistance as per service manual
Alternator Exciter Coil > OK resistance as per service manual
Alternator Pulse Generator > OK resistance as per service manual

What can blow from running the bike without battery connected?

I have jumper cabled a spark plug to ground, and i do not see any sparks when kicking the scooter.

A small engine spark tester is a good tool to have when trying to diagnose a no spark condition. Sometimes grounding a plug just doesn't do it. Have you tried different plugs? Try the plug on something like a lawn mower and see if you get a spark to jump. If you don't have a spark tester find a bolt that fits in the plug clip and place the bolt close to bare metal on the chassis and see if you have spark when you crank it. Image
Thats the kind of tester I have, can't live without it. Its surprising how often I use it. I check for no spark right away if I have a motor that won't start saves tearing in to stuff needlessly.

No this is not true, the rear light has nothing to do with the kill switch.

Nothing can blow from no battery. the scooter does not even need the battery to run.

Check the ground cable that connects the coil to the frame.

And also make sure that the frame and the engine are both grounded to each other.

Right you guys are, apparently everything was fine, and I just had to stomp on the kick-starter 20 times. I guess the spark was actually working, but I could not see it. Been using scoot for months since, and it's still sparking fine.

You can in deed ruin the regulator and blow out some lights along the way rolling battery less, it needs the load resistance to stop it from charging. You'll notice as you rev an ac powered bike the head light will get brighter then stop once its at "full" brightness, that is due to the current being limited from the regulator. With out the battery the reg will just continue to allow current to build with out no where to displace it(battery), so the current goes to the lights, cdi, senders. After a few days/hours/minutes the regulator will over heat and fail.

Greetings:

Mouse, didn't you once prescribe some sort of capacitor that could replace the battery, and keep the components safe? It'd be cool to know a source for one that works.
