Anyone know if a spree or elite starter will work on a gyro?

All Sprees have the wrong mounting plate
Variated AF05's have a mounting plate which bolts up, but there are a couple issues
1) Rotation direction is reversed.
You can turn the can 180 degrees to reverse rotation, but it takes grinding off keying tabs on the can
2) AF05 starters have 11 teeth, and bind when used on a Gyro
3) Gyro has an oil seal on the output side, AF05 starters do not.
4) Electrical input is wider on AF05, and stock flag terminal will not slide over

If you starter has a burnt armature Gyro's have a 10 tooth armature. 84-85 Sprees have a 10 tooth armature which works fine swapped with a Gyro. Avoid 86-87 Sprees as they are 11 tooth.

Thanks mousewheels, my main problem is the starter is missing completely. I have several different starters for. I tried an 85 elite 80 starter but the screw holes didn't line up and it wouldnt engage the gear

Yeah - Gyro starters hard to find - or expensive. Have you seen the eBay prices

Go with the AF05 starter with can rotated. Grind down the power tab sides and the Gyro connector will fit. Swap the armature out for a 10 tooth Spree if you have one.

The bind because of 11T shaft is noticeable - it will crank slow, and be a bit hard on the starter/battery.

I havecan se50 motor with a good starter I didn't try. Is there any pics on how to 180 the can cause I dont really understand how that would make it spin a different direction

Exactly.

It's intuitive that swapping the power leads reverses direction of a DC motor. That changes what was the North pole to South pole on the armature.

Mechanically, rotating the can 180 is equivalent to reversing the power leads. Same as swapping the electrical leads, it reverses magnetics of the system. What used to be the armature cogging by attraction to the closest magnet becomes repelling in the opposite direction.

It is possible to reverse the leads inside the starter if you are bent upon doing that way. It's just easier to rotate the can.

I took a set of pics covering the mod and am tracking them down. Will re-shoot if needed.

On your side, give it a try on the bench, it only requires removal and replacement of 2 screws for a bench test. Once you see correct rotation - it takes light grinding of the starter case indexing tabs to make it fit on the scooter.

Here's pics illustrating the alignment tabs before/after a 180 degree case rotation. They show Mitsuba's careful attention to make sure a mis-assembled starter is noticed. That's why we need to grind the tab when reversing the starter.

When removing the starter case, keep the mounting plate and armature seated all the way from start to re-assembly. It takes much more effort if the brushes drop off the commutator.

I have a dead gyro starter I need to rebuild. It has a couple pieces of the copper inside broken. So if I understand right I just need to used the inside/ arm of a 84-85 spree 10 tooth and I can use the gyro housing and mounting plate right?

Correct - Spree 10 tooth armature makes a good replacement for a Gyro, fits housing and mount plate fine.
