Gates or Bando belt?

Post by qaz »

I put a new belt on my 1999 SA50. The belt was a Gates belt made in China 641x15.5x30, in about a month it had torn several cog off the belt. What would cause this and are the Gates belts made in the USA a better quality? Is it worth trying another Gates belt with Kevlar, or go back to the Bando.

Bando has been proven to be super durable. How else would belts last 30 years and still be in decent working order. Honda uses bando for a reason for figure.

Has anyone had any experience with the Gates brand belts? If not, what brand do most buy around here and why?

I have some gates belts for testing purposes for stock replacement for belts that aren't available they aren't power sport specific belts and I havent had any time on them yet so I can't say how they hold up to the banco, all I know is I have near 8000km on a 1984 stock banco belt and its still good. And I have over 5000km on another 1985 banco belt and still going. My friend with a 85 aero like mine has over 8000 on her stock banco belt. See a pattern here ;-) the bando belts work so well nobody really thinks about changing to anything else unless its a special specific racing application belt like the malossi belt pauly mentioned. The gates belts may be perfectly fine but the only way to know is to try it out an see.

Thanks, after some thought, I will just stick with the original Bando belt.

Good choice, my gates belt lost power after about 2 months. Wish I had stuck OEM Bando.

The Malossi Kevlar belt is hard to beat. I supply a couple of racers with these and they request them for a reason.

The Polini and the Bando are both good belts. The Polini might grab a little better but it is hard to tell.
