2001 Elite slow oil leak

Post by piperpiper »

Hi,

2001 Elite is slowly leaking oil - just oil, not fuel - and my local repair place charges hundreds regardless of the issue. Are there any relatively simple items I can check myself? Thanks for any tips.

Where does it seem to be leaking oil from? There is just the tank, oil line, and oil pump. Any other place would be more than oil. Sometimes the line cracks at the clasps.

Thanks, Curtis966 - it's hard to tell where it's leaking from...I just find the oil on the garage floor. There is oil on the top of the black part just below the side panel on the kickstarter side. Sorry I don't know the part names. I'm pretty mechanical but haven't tried taking anything apart because I don't know if there are special tools etc. necessary. Is taking off that side panel the first step? It looks like just screws on that. Thank you so much for any advice - a couple of guys have looked at it but they didn't want to work on it so I've been a little stuck. Piper

Oddball failure

My '98 Elite leaked at the oil level sending unit. Sender has a rubber top, which shrunk. That cause oil to leak until the oil level was below the level of the sender.

+1 - I've had 3 different scoots do this. Seems like I was able to add an o-ring on one of them and it stopped the leak.

It seems to be leaking from somewhere else usually because the leak travels down to the bottom of the oil tank and then drips onto the left side cover usually.

Good luck

Mine dripped off the left side too.

Found a pic of the failed sensor and oil tank level a bit below the leak point. Since the fill level is well above the switch, a leak at the oil switch can seep quite a while. Or if the leak is bad, make a large puddle :)

That pic restored my memory - I've sold my 2001 Elite but I was able to place an o-ring in that middle groove and it stopped the problem - made it a real snug fit.

There are two plastic tubes and the lower one in the pic has one end not attached to anything - can this be right?!? Well, now I'm not sure the image is attached...

That's carb drain hose. Your leak is the hose on the tank there is a weird hose setup at bottom of oil tank it leaks down to left side of bike I've had 2 do it
