How to bleed/drain an oil line with a bubble in it

Post by fluffyruffles »

Hi everyone,

My Spree broke down a while ago. The piston was fried or whatever, I forget what the term is. There was no oil getting to it and it burned out. The guy who sold it to me was a hack I guess, because I realized that there was an air bubble in the oil line, which I'm guessing is what caused the problem. (Let me know if I'm totally off base with that.)

I already replaced the piston and cylinder.

Now I want to drain out all the oil to fix the air bubble situation but I've never done anything like that and reading the Spree manual doesn't really leave me feeling confident. Does anyone have a link to a video of someone doing that on a similar scooter that will show me the basic mechanics of the thing? Something I can easily translate onto my Spree? I'm super new to working on anything with an engine, ha. A video of someone putting everything back together properly, without air bubbles, would also be great.

Thank you!

I would be checking the screen in the oil tank and giving it a cleaning.

To purge oil from the line... I pull the pump and attach my cordless drill to the end of the pump shaft and run it till all air is purged. Done more than 6 times on many scoots. It take about 2 minutes on high.

Good luck my friend and stay thirsty.
I'm more than happy to explain it to you. I'll even draw you a picture! But I can't understand it for you.

Hmm, sounds like I have a lot of research to do.

Can I run it on premix in the meantime? And what's the proper ratio for gas to oil? 16:1?

No,...that ratio is too rich with oil.
32:1 is the most I would ever run, and 50:1 is probably fine....imho

If the bubble is between the tank and pump, you'll need to pull line from pump and let pour into a cup until no air and then put back on pump - keep lots of rags around. (good time to clean the filter at tank as mentioned)

If the bubble is between the pump and the intake,

If it's all put together and you don't want to pull the oil pump:
1) put a little pre-mix in the tank
2) pull the oil line off the intake/carb nipple
3) cap the nipple
4) start scooter and let idle
5) if you have an adjustable pump, hold it wide open
6) oil will slowly seep/surge out - catch it in a cup until the bubble passes, then turn off scoot and re-connect
7) if you can't get all the bubbles out, no worries, just run pre-mix for a few miles and they should work themselves out

good luck

Greetings:

Premix, cap your nipples and hold onto your pump if you must. Or you can use a syringe - kids' medicines often come with one - remove the short line from pump to intake. Inject oil into the line, hold your finger on the end to keep the oil from draining out or keep it in a "U" shape full of oil. Plug into the pump first, then the intake barb. Yer Du'n.
