Derestricting the Iowa

Greetings all. Just finished restoring an 85 Iowa. I exchanged the small exhaust for the bigger boxier 86 exhaust (cooked out on a fire.) It runs famously but 26 is it. From what I'm reading is the restrictor actually in the jug portion? Also who sells this #68? jet I would need for more SPEED?

Also, years ago before I owned it, I ground off the gear for the oil injection pump and inserted it back in place to stuff the crankcase properly, but now I have to mix fuel for it. It seems to start WAY better than any other spree I've had, maybe because of no oil pump drag??? Anyway, does anyone know what fuel/oil ratio I should be using now? I am Going with a 3.2 oz. to a gallon mix, but wonder if I can't go leaner. Thanks, folks. :blah:

You don't need the 68 jet for more speed you need the 68 jet to keep the proper air fuel ratio to keep the thing from seizure ;-) the oil pump doesn't put that much drag on the the crank to make starting easier if it wasn't there. I would think that a 50:1 ratio or a 45 or 40:1 the stock ratio is somewhere around 70:1 I think so wouldnt a 40 or 50:1 should be just fine. You don't want too much oil because it takes up space for fuel in the mixture so you don't get as much cooling on the piston. As for the jet any Honda dealer should be able to get that jet. Or if you have a set of numbered drills you can go look up the jet size in the chart and drill it.

Thanks Pat. Helpful as always. What about the exhaust restriction? This things stuck at 26, and I've ported the intake nicely. Should do 29 but its not.

If its the original Iowa exhaust you just need to drill or grind the restriction washer out of the flange end of the pipe. A step drill would work really well.

Measure the width of the belt. If its worn narrow it will lose some top speed. 28mph is all my stock 84 spree would do before any mods. 86/87 sprees are a little faster.

On the jug or the muffler? Where do you get your belts? I looked for them a few yr ago and thought they were hard to find.

Wish i had some help for you fairlead....
The Spree is not my friend.
It makes me sad.
Sure it's cute.
but that's not enough, so I welcome Sprees in one door, and out the other.

Just use photo bucket to post or a similar app or service. Once you have the pic on pb click the share button and select the IMG link and paste the link into a post and that will post the pic
