Honda Spree Kickstarter Won't Work

Went out to start my spree the other day and the kicker wouldn't budge, after taking off the side cover it appears as if the half moon gear is stripped. Is that a common problem? The splines look fine on the other piece but I was watching a youtube video that said the half moon gear doesn't fail.
