Spree Engine creeps instead of accelerating, help?

Post by epiclytrife »

I just bought an 87 spree off of a neighbor and it ran fine for the first few rides. However, now when I do the electric start it idles but when I try to accelerate it just revs and barely creeps. Sometimes it doesn't even creep. Even when I floor it. Is it the fan belt or some other type of pulley? I called the honda motorcycle dealership here where I live here in FL and they said they don't feel comfortable working on it cause it's so old.

So if I could get some help from this forum I'd like to try and fix it myself.
Any suggestions?

If its been setting around for a while, the drive belt may have deteriorated. Also rust caused by condensation may have formed on the pulleys and chewed up the belt as you rode it. You should pull the the drive belt and clutch cover and take a look.

thanks. I'm thinking that the belt is worn out from sitting for so long. Perhaps I might need to clean out the carb too eh?

here is a trick my dad taught me on how to check if you have good compression, and get the engine running, and possibly make the engine fix it self if the bore is not to scored
1.turn the engine over by hand note how difficult it is
2.remove the sparkplug and put a generous squirt of oil inside replace the plug
3.turn the engine over some more if it is noticeably harder its probably time to tear down your engine to see what is wrong. however sometimes the motor will over heat causing the rings to stick to the piston, if this happens and you have no compression you can get the motor running using the oil to seal the leaky rings temporarily. sometimes the rings will unstick themselves once you get it running to.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

I bet the clutch is shot... check your clutch pads.
