85’ Spree UPDATES!!!!

So I just picked up an 85’ Honda spree and was going through it. I know the 85’ has a shorter gear ratio so I’d like to swap to the 86’/87’ final drive ratio, can anyone tell me the number of teeth between the two?

Anyone have a line on a 13T driveshaft? I find tons of 12T but no 13’s.

Just search ebay for "spree gear" and look for one that came out of an 86' or 87', if uncertain, ask the seller if they would count how many teeth it has, or better yet, send you a side view of it with the teeth showing so you can count them yourself. THEN... low ball em an offer for it. eBay sellers tend to think they have struck gold when it comes to Spree parts.

Ok, I picked up a second Spree during this saga, also 85. Very good shape, low miles. Here is how it went:

All results on flat ground on a nearly dead calm day. No uphill, downhill crap. I have some downhill speed but I’m not going to muddy this thread. Please keep in mind I’m 6’3” and 225-230.

1) new plug, new air filter since the one in it was basically dust, good carb cleaning, tire pressures set on stock size tires. A typical 85, good acceleration relative to 86’/87’ but slower (12T vs. 13T driveshaft), reading just a few tenths over 28GPS.

2). Installed MLM pipe, slightly slower off the line, but pulls like crazy once it “gets on the pipe” to 30-31 and the slowly pulls to a few tenths over 34 GPS.

3). Installed Scooter swap shop speed pulley and new belt. Lost even more bottom end, but tolerable, start to pull decent around 16-18 and now get on the pipe around 25mph pulling immediately to 35-36 mph and topping out just shy of 40mph, 39.6 (bouncing between 39.3 and 39.8 ).

I tried to upjet the carb to a 72, bogging high rpm didn’t, like it. Down to a 70, didn’t like it, ended up back at stock of 68.

All of these are with a completely stock motor! Stock dished piston and all!

Next steps: the Spree that started this thread (also 85’), the cylinder I was waiting for arrived today, honing it tomorrow. That motor will be 86’ cylinder, 86/87’domed piston, 85’ head, MLM pipe, and I will use a 13T driveshaft instead of the speed pulley to see what happens with bottom end and top speed! I have 2 sets of SB50 reeds and intakes coming, for each scooter!

More to follow!!!

Good deal, would be very interested to know what improvements come to you doing a 13T .vs the stock 12T. You might consider picking up a spare intake and porting it out to go along with those SB50 reeds. After doing so, you should be able to run a 70 or 72 main, might need to drill 1 or 2 small (like 10mm) holes in the airbox after porting and jet change. Don't drill though until you have actually ported. And, like I said, use a spare... just in case A. you screw it all up, or B. The changes make things worse for you (shouldn't but ya never know). That, and spare intakes are pretty cheap on eBay. If the intakes you have coming in are actual SB50 intakes, you'll need to run premix since it doesn't have the oil hole. Go 40:1. Otherwise, you'd need to change out that carb.

Good catch on the new intakes, didn’t realize about the oil hole...they are SB50, he sent me pictures.

I also created a SSS speed pulley shim mod to allow users to change the ratio and allow for tunability.

I took 1.5mm off the back of the pulley so it will slide further onto the crank. This is a list off pulley stacks. Whatever you take off the back otf the pulley, you double the distance between the pulleys to keep them centered.
