Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

With the help of this forum and a lot of elbow grease. My 1985 spree that I pulled out of a barn is running pretty well.

Sometimes, I will need to inject a few milliliters of gas into the carb through the throttle slide. This isn't a major issue but one I'd like to solve so that when I press the start button, most of the time, it will start right up and go.

I'm curious if anyone knows how to fix the condition that would cause the need for me to inject gas for the spree to start.

Is it that gas is leaking out of one of the chambers in the carb?

I don't think you have "gas leaking out of one of the chambers".
There's several possible issues present that can cause "hard-to-start" condition.
1. Bystarter is not working properly. If the bystarter is not returning the needle back to the "cold" position, then the cold-start enrichment circuit is not being opened, and the needle is staying extended which shuts off the circuit.
2. The "hole" that allows gas to fill the "well" (which provides gas to the circuit) is plugged.
3. The passage that leads from the mouth of the carburetor, and is regulated by the idle-air mixture screw, is plugged.
4. The idle-air mixture screw is either too far in or too far out. Should be opened 1 1/2 to 2 turns OUT from full shut.
Any clarification you need about these conditions I will be glad to explain.

All of what motormike said and especially #2. Also, we're assuming that you have the stock air filter box in place with an air filter in it.

The spree does have a stock air box and newer OEM oiled filter in it.

I am curious about where the hole and we'll are located for number 2. I can post a picture if that would help. This sounds promising.

Carb is stock with newer gasket/orings.

That looks highly suspect. I've tried to clean it out with a bit of tiny wire, been probably 6 months. Any tips of cleaning that little sucker?

My choice for cleaning carburetor jets is the "Motorcycle Jet Cleaner" set that has always done the job. See LINK below.
It's same as using a piece of guitar string, etc. but it has a great selection of sizes and is meant for the job.
Buying the Navi was a good call.
It's probably the best "run-around" bike I've ever had.
I find the rear brake weak and the footpegs a little too far forward. My only complaints.
It's a great handling scoot, and for the LOW cost, hard to beat.
