Gyro Oil Pump Repair

Post by motormike »

When oil drains down past the check-ball in the oil pump, what is the proper way to remedy the problem, considering you want to retain the pump in use ?

If anyone would know the inner workings of those it would be Dave (mousewheels). I can PM you his number if you want.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Yeah, go ahead and share that. I'm not only trying to help a guy in NY with issue, but it looks like my own Gyro has developed similar problem. I've looked at a thread that mousewheels discusses the issue, but have additional questions.

Pull the check valve (it's a light press fit)
1) Spray from the pump side w/carb cleaner.
Post cleaning test:
Connect the pump side of the valve to the oil tank line (rather than re-assemble the pump)..
Let sit a few days.

2) The above didn't work for the first couple bad check valves I had. So anymore I
always swap in a working check valve. I used Spree oil pumps as a source, but
if you have an Aero 50/Elite 50 pump around I suspect the check valve would also work.

The link below has pics of the Spree/TG60 oil pumps and a teardown of a bad check valve
