Trouble starting

My 1984 Gyro will start first try after a week of sitting and on a chilly 40 degree morning every time. Problem is after i ride it for a bit and turn it off for more then 20 minutes it won't start for about 4+ hours. If i want to start it back up before then i must pour a little gas into the cylinder. If I let it sit for about 4+ hours after riding though it it starts right up with no priming

I was thinking that i have a faulty and very slow bystarter?

Also my Gyro has the petcock valve which has the ON/OFF toggle switch. Is it important to turn teh petcock valve to OFF when not riding? I have to use pliers to turn the switch so i usually keep it at ON at all times. Any chance this could be a source of my problems? Would leaving the Petcock valve ON cause any problems?
