won't idle properly

Post by HarleyRon »

Finally got the 85 spree running after years of sitting up. Got a carb from ebay, cleaned it multiple times and added in-line fuel filter. Spree is a little difficult to start (sometimes have to hold throttle about 1/3 open) but once started runs down the street pretty good. Idle is crazy, it will idle way high for 10 or 15 seconds then drops down for a few seconds then back high then too low and dies. Any ideas?

Check for air leaks around air filter and intake area.

Your float might be shot or not operating smoothly.
It might also be your choke is taking a dive or not seated all the way in.

Ok, I've checked for intake leaks and all seems well. Float and needle are new and have double checked them. I guess maybe the choke could be acting up.

How did you check for air leaks between the carb and the intake pipe? With the engine idling, I liberally spray starting fluid on the insulator block. If the idle speed temporarily increases, check for a crack or inefffective O-rings.
