As an addendum, I attempted to use vise grips as well as pliers. It's just pressed in there right? Not screwed?

Allright, I got it out. I see a pinprick of light coming through it, smaller than the opening on either end. I pushed a paperclip into it and it seems pretty solid. Is this a blockage or how it was manufactuerd?
The body of the carb above this needle it also features a pinprick hole.

The idle jet should only pass a pinprick of light.

How's this for an alternative theory. I noticed that my tinkering seemed to be producing a puddle by the back wheel. Black, but not as thick as oil, perhaps some sort of oil/gas mix. It seemed to be coming from inside the crankcase, so I pulled the crankcase cover off. It's hard to see, but I think it is coming around the drive pulley.
Does this add any clues?

You blew a crank seal.

Well, at least I know what the problem is. How much of the block do I have to tear down to replace it?
