I got an 86 spree from a guy that didnt take care of it(for $250). It is missing the air filter...can it run without it until I get one? (to set idle etc not to ride around on) also where can I get a few of them?

I havent taken off the carb yet (I'm a rookie...this is my first mechanical project) It will start then die after about 10 seconds. I did change the oil and fuel, cleaned both filters an lines. Fuel diaphram seems to work...

Any ideas? Thanks.

when i was fixing up the spree when i first got it, it had no air filter. after i got it working, it ran fine w/out a filter, till like past 1/2 throttle. so theoretically ur setup should still work, but it helps a lot to have a filter.

My Spree would also start, run briefly, then die. I had a new air filter so, for me, the air filter was not the cause of this symptom. I had a blocked idle jet which when cleaned out cured my problem. I subsequently had the same problem and again found the idle jet blocked. With new lines and a fuel filter I never had to clean the idle jet again.
