1979 Honda Express runs when it wants to

I have a 1979 honda express that has been passed around between my friends forever. It will run oinly when it feels like it. Sometimes it will run for 5 minutes, sometimes it will run for 2 seconds. I am thinking the carb is pretty dirty and am going to run carb cleaner through it, but just wanted to know if anyone had any other ideas for me. Oh, i thas 3335 original miles.
