head light issues on Elite 50

I have a 99 50-s elite that runs great but the head lamp is out. I went to the honda town near my house and got the part number. The problem is that it is gonna cost $50 because you have to replace the whole head lamp unit. I am fine not having bright and dim, I just want the front head light to work.

I figure there has to be a cheaper and easier way to fix it by maybe finding something at a car parts store etc. Anyone help me?

Thanks

Are you sure its the light?

I am almost positive it is the light. When i look into the middle of the light it appears to be a rust color at the center like a burnt out bulb.

Also, the rear light and all of my dash, turn and other display lights work as well.

Try and look in the Wanted / For Sale section. Had a few guys parting out their bikes. Probably can pick one up from them for cheap.

is the low and high beam burnt out?

if you order the 2001 elite s headlight it uses an h4 type bulb so you can replace the bulb if it burns out again instead of the whole unit.

both hi and low are not working.

How much am I lookin to pay for the 2001 unit? I would like to be able to fix it asap.

Preferrably head to a parts store and pick up the piece so i dont have to wait for it to come in after i order it. I dont necessarily need the high and low beam just as long as i have working headlight I would be happy.

thanks for the help

iirc the price is similar to the sealed beam unit.

if you just want to see if its the bulb, go and buy an h4 bulb with the correct wattage as the stock light and plug it in to the headlight plug, if it works and doesnt burn out shortly after then you know the light was the problem and you can use the bulb in the 2001 assy.

Does anyone know what the correct wattage 4h bulb i should be looking for?My manual does not say anything about bulb probably because they want me to purchase the whole headlamp.

As i said i would like to just have a light in the mean time while i look for a headlamp replacement later on the forums.

Thanks guys

So will the 2001 headlight unit work on a 1998 version elite?
If so, would anything need to be changed?

Just curious because mine needs to be replaced as the low beams don't work and I would rather have the assembly that allowed for me to change the bulb instead of having to replace the whole assembly because that would be alot cheaper to replace a bulb instead of the whole assembly..ya know

A lot of the scooter headlights are 25W/25W. Have you called the local light distributer to see if they have a replacement?

Service Manual (SA-50 88_02) says that the 88-00 was 25w/25w like bear45-70 says

After 2000 the bulb changed to 35/35w - that's the replaceable bulb

I got cheaper replacement headlight bulbs for my Quads at the local auto parts store. Less than half of what the dealer wanted and they also had upgrade bulbs available too. Since I don't night ride, I just got the standard bulbs.
