boggs out at top end

Post by spreeman »

hey, i'm new here. i got my spree about a month ago and i've been using this site as a guid to re-build, but i can't seem to find an answer to my one major problem...

my spree idles for a minute or so on it's own before u have to rev it once or twice, pretty normal, rite? well, i get it out on the rode and hold it wide open, and it accelerates to about 25 and won't go any faster. i think the carb floods or something like that, because if i don't let the throttle down a bit when i hit 25 then it looses power and slows down to a stop. if i take it onto a dirt road, it takes more gas to hold it at 25, and once i give it more gass it boggs out again.

i cleaned my muffler yesterday, and smelt gas, and today i was idleing it in my driveway by putting it up on the stand and taking off the brake. i held the throttle wide open, and the wheel spun for awhile, then the muffler was making popping noises, and it shot a flame out...

any suggestions? i'll get a compression reading when i can.

Look at my post, same thing I was having compression was off, and the auto bystarter o-ring was allowing the fuel/air mixture to go rich causing the spark plug to get wet. If the carb is clean and holes are unclogged I would check for a vacuum leak. Fixed mine with a $0.67 oring and re-torquing the head.

Obviously you have to check to make sure your air filter is good, your float and petcock are functioning to spec, and in my case the procedure to check the auto bystarter was what showed to be the issue.

I will cavet the advice if yours starts with no problem. In my case it would never start...and when it would, it would do what yours does. To much gas in the engine, at full throttle, there are only adjustments via 2 settings, the height of the pin in the throttle and the lack of air/vacuum leak in the air flow. The carb adjustments are just idle adjustments and have nothing to do with full throttle. If it starts and idles for minutes on end with no issue and then dies on throttle its not in the carb adjustment screws.

Anyone can correct that or point out any errors.

Sounds like a main jet/needle issue.

Read the manual for how to check your needle height (there are several settings.) Remove the main jet, make sure it's clear and marked as a #65 jet. I'm guessing it's either blocked or the wrong size.

there is nothing in the manual that says anything about the size of the needle. it talks about the needle on page 31, but all it talks about is disasembling it.

Look again. There is a needle height setting.

The main jet should be a #65. Not the needle, the jet.

i think i did it. i changed the c-clip from the 5th position (rich) to the 3rd. it starts up better now, but it still doesn't go any faster. i can hear the engine turning... could it be the belt slipping?

Have you checked the head/exhaust port and pipe for carbon buildup?
