which bike is mine?

Post by madison »

I just picked up this scooter and want to make sure which model it is (back in the USA).
http://www.honda.co.jp/news/1988/2880329p.html
It really looks like a Elite but when I downloaded the SA50 service manual I noticed a couple of differences: the front suspension is different and the air cleaner is on the other side (right side) of the engine on mine.
From what I gather, mine is a SG50 MJ.

I am really wondering about the rear bolt torque specs.
I think it's a 22mm bolt.
I have some rear breaks showing up and want to get the rear wheel off.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi:

This appears to be the PAX Club. This was not released as a model in the US. It uses the AF05E engine which is the same as is used in the Elite E (SB50P). You can double check this by looking at the belt drive. If there is no variator, just a direct belt pulley drive, then that's what you have. The nearest US manual you will be able to find will be for the Elite E. You could also try eBay-ing european sites for the Met-In manual, as that is also a similar machine.

Sorry Dac:

If madison has the correct link for his/her scoot then its not a G. Here is a "Dash G". Its a later model than the PAX with a Dio engine.

Thanks Clivester!
Yes, it is a PAX Club.
There are a million of them still around over here.

I will have a look at the belt.
When I take off the clutch/varitor cover does it usually ruin the gasket or is the gasket rubber?

Yes Dac, the body style looks a lot like that picture, minus the front disk breaks.
The front suspension is the same though.

Yes, Clive that picture is even closer.
The link I posted is exactly like the bike I have.
I can take a picture of the engine if it helps?
It would be a plus i the engine is a Dio style, right?

Thanks for all the info so far.
(BTW I'm a dude)

yeah, post some pictures of it. i really wanna see this.

also, Dio motor is awesome. Best motor you can get.
If it has the SB50 then its slow, and you cant get any parts.

Interesting pictures.

Looking at that engine, it seems more like the early Elite SA50 version of the AF05e engine than the SB50 version. If that's the case you should find a true CVT in there. If you do, then your best bet for a Repair manual would probably be the version that covers Elites from 88-93. I also see that the brake hub is on the left like an SA50, rather than on the right like the SB.

Weird how the air filter is on the right!

Yes, I just looked at the block stamp.
It's an AF05E.
Is it a pre-Dio engine or are they the same?

I replaced the rear breaks today and got curious.
Yes there is a CVT in there.
I think the clutch shoes are worn so I ordered some up.

I am trying to get it in top running shape.
How many miles are they capable of (with regular maintenance) before the scrap bin?

I am still wondering about the air filter on the right too.
At first I thought it was for safety or some odd reason.
Now I am wondering if it's something particular about the airflow that is needed.

Hi Madison:

OK - sounds like you have the same engine as found on the early model Elite SA50 from 1988-1993. That is not the "Dio" type motor - SORRY  . If you can see the exhaust port coming off the cylinder, I'm almost certain you will find that it exits at about a 45 degree angle from the centerline of the scoot. That would be the clincher for it being the early SA50.

The location of the air filter has little to do with airflow, since the US scoots using that engine all have them coming straight off the rear of the carb.

Did you get the specs for the rear wheel nut torque?

Hi Clive!

Yes, exactly right....the exhaust port is at about 45 degrees.

On the rear wheel torque, I went with the SA50 manual I downloaded.
It stated 80 ft lbs of pressure.
That was sort of tough.

On the variator.
Mine seems to have a 3 small bolts securing the plate that covers the rollers.
Looks to be stock from the diagram in the manual.
If I understand correctly, removing this plate will increase speed a bit?
I am already at 37 mph top speed.

Here is a pic of my variator for reference.

Thanks!!
