Reed valves

Post by gobucks »

what are some of the symptoms of bad reeds, i was wondering if low compression is one of them, because it am getting about 90 psi of compression and have replaced the rings, head and base gasket with no improvement, are the reed valves a probable cause for the low compression?

nope, bad reeds would cause s*** or no running. Did you hone the bore and break it in?

no honing, didn't really do a very long break in, can bad reed valves in any way make the bike die at high rpms?

the cylinder looked really good, no grooves or gashes, so i don't know why the compression was so low to start with.

its not the reeds.

If the reeds are bad, your bike will be just about impossible to start.

If you use cheap oil your engine will smoke and probably not last as long.

remove the air box, remove the carb, remove the intake thing that the carb is on. Then there is a little plastic holder thing with the reeds in it.

Spree Compression

Post by DENMANSHAFFER »

Both my 86 Spree's register around 90 PSI on my compression tester and both start easily and run fine. One has 2500 miles and the other about 1600. I have never had the head off of either one.

These tiny engines will give false reading form dead volume in some testers, the gauge that screws directly into the plug hole with no hose will be the most accurate.

Old gas can cause it to smoke and run badly. If you did not drain the tank and fill with fresh gas you need to do that first and see what happens.
