Can't get my air/fuel mix right, either too rich or too lean

Post by SprEE*MP* »

Hey, I'm having problems with air/fuel ratio. Here's what's happening:

1: Main jet is on 4th notch, (factory setting) air skrew all the way in. I will randomly bog on and off. Spark plug = nice light brown.

2: Main jet 5th notch (full rich) air skrew have had in many settings. No bog. BUT spark plug= ALWAYS BLACK!!!

-my gas IS good.
-No clue about the oil (all i know is that it IS 2-stoke oil, and blue)
-Air filter is good.

My question: what's going on/ how do I fix it?

Clean carb?
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Go back the the fourth notch on the needle (it's not the jet, but fits into the jet) and adjust the air screw to 1 1/2 turns.

Air screw is only supposed to impact the pilot jet i.e. the first 1/4-1/3 of throttle. If its having an effect elsewhere in the range you have some other issue.

is this thing stock? modified? is the plug the correct heat range? is it a good plug? the needle only controls mid throttle mixture. what helped me out was actually marking out 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and wot on the grip with a marker and a reference line on the plastic fairing to determine exactly what needed adjustment...

plug is perfect, the only mod is a drilled muffler
-even with the one on the fourth notch and the air skrew 1 1/2 out, it still bogs
