87 spree intake reeds?
are they ok to put on an iowa spree an 84 i put the exaust on here from the 87 it goes faster can i dril the 1st 2 baffles on the 87 pipe for even more performance and what about the gears from the 87 can i ut them in the 84 i was gonna restore the 87 but its to far gone also can i put the piston and head from the 87 in the 84 will that make a difference? what parts from the 87 will give mebetter performance and the 84 runs verry nice as is its just a wee bit to slow
I'd agree; if the '87 engine works (or can be made to work) I'd be tempted to just swap it in as one piece. That will get you to 35MPH by itself, easily bumped to 40 with some pulley work and a few things.
There are some wiring differences, but they are minimal and the wire diagrams are on this site in Tech Docs.
I'd leave drilling the exhaust alone for now and concentrate on some other things.
The '87 domed piston would be superior to your dished '84 piston, so if it's in good shape and the same size I'd swap it in. Keep the '84 head though; this will bump up your compression against the domed piston, which will rock.
Your '84 jug probably has more conservative porting than the '87, you can quickly assess this by measuring the height of the intake and exhaust ports; both the height of the port and how far it measures from the top of the cylinder. I'd be interested in what you find out. Depending on what you find out, and the '87 jug condition, I'd swap it over too.
Pull the '87 13T rear pinion as well and replace the '84 12T pinion.
I'd be surprized if the '84 vs. '87 reeds made any difference... can you seen a difference in the design? I think they'll be the same. If there's a difference, I'd like a picture of the two side-by-side to post on the board. If the reeds are different, you might also check the intake manifold.
At some point, you will want to modify the pulley. The stock '84 inner pulley half is aluminum and can easily be filed down. Look into tech docs on this, and start small, .01" at a time.
The '87 rear panels and turn signals are a better design, IMHO, and if they are in good shape I'd try to swap them onto your scoot.
Have fun and keep us posted.

ill take a picture of the reeds soon
the reeds in the 87 were open 2 times as much as the 84 andi only switched piston not jug too i may try that but the 87 engine was toast i took the reeds and the piston and the exaust from the 87 it got me from 20 running sluggish at wot to 25 and no bogging at all now.
I wonder if the reeds on the '87 are the same used on the SB50. Did they look like the difference between these?
