What exactly does the bystarter do?

Post by Spreewell »

I've read the service manual and searched the forum and can't seem to find out what exactly the bystarter does. Any help appreciated!

Thanks from a Noob.

its a needle that acts as sort of a choke. it allows more fuel to enter when its cold.

It is a slow auto choke. As the engine is running it slowly moves out to close off the enriching circuit that causes excess gas into the intake between the throttle and combustion chamber. When you shut the engine off it will slowly move back to open. The idea is it moves in conjunction with the heating and cooling of the engine. Engine cold, bystarter retracted into the unit itself. Engine warm, needle and barrel extened to seat and seal the fuel and air from entering the intake.

This is why the oring is important. Without that oring the seal to the outside of the carb lets air into the intake and causes a lack of stable air flow causing rpms to rise and full at will.

If your bike's running without the bystarter in place, it's getting a lot more air than it should. I'm surprized it runs at all... isn't it loading up with dirt and crud?
