You only buy what parts you need, the only kit you can get is all the gaskets.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

True, ok.

Um, well what do i do next? i'm still at 30 psi compression. Spark and fuel ok. What to start with helping my compression or eliminating parts.

Rings i dont feel would make a dramatic change, but would help.
I think my reeds are ok.
What about crank seals?

You have low compression, and think it's the crank seals? Seriously? Not the rings? Why is that?

Crank Seals

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Evidence of crank seal failure would appear at the ends of the crank. If you have a side cover or an alternator full of molasses, you need to check that out. Otherwise, I'm with NoiseGuy. If you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras.

Bad crank seals wont cause bad compression, it just wont run or wont run right.

well i'm getting little vacuum. And 30 psi.

I'm not sure, thats why i'm asking questions.

Yeah, i took the cylinder off about a month ago, looks alright and so does the piston.

I'm gathering that i'm not fit for a honda spree. :)

You have got to be missing something if the bore is nice n shiny.

If you're not fit for a Honda Spree....maybe you should stick with power wheels, because internal combustion engines don't come much simpler than this, my friend.....
1986 Honda Spree - Running amazing.....body work still needs to be done, but that's a Spring job.

ha.

So where do i start next if its so simple.

The cylinder wasn't brand new, but it didn't have grooves and the rings were moving freely. Should i just buy a new set of rings and try them?

Inspection means more than verifying the lack of gouges. Just because the piston rings "move freely" doesn't guarantee they provide an effective pressure seal in operation. Things can be worn out without visible signs of damage.

The Service Manual specifies dimensional service limit specifications. That requires Expensive Precision Measuring Equipment which costs more than a new bore, but might provide a fun learning experience. Maybe a machinist can mic your stuff and you can compare that to the Factory specs. I'm pretty sure you will find much amiss.

Unfortunately the Spree limits your choices for restoration to Honda-san, AFAIK. It appears clear to me that a fresh dimensionally-correct cylinder or a re-bore of yours to the first "oversize" piston and new rings will restore compression and the rest is up to your budding mechanical skills.
