Starter Clutch issues

Post by mrece »

Hi, Ive got a 91 Pal. The problem is that the small cogged device that loosley fits onto the starter motor cog and engages with the large cog on the motor that has the belt that drives the back wheel cf clutch only engages very rarely.. so wont start.

After taking off the cover ( the large aluminum one that protects drive belt etc ) I find that iff I suort the end of this thing, it does "pop" out and the teeth engage with the main motor cog but only wiiirrrsss ( spins and buzzes ) every so often it does engage and it starts the pal.

I replaced the springs and the 3 clutchy things but same thing.

Question...should this be very dry or lubricated?

NB I dont ave a kick starter..broke years ago.

Thanks Guys

The starter gear is supposed to be dry however you can spray a light amount of lubricant then wipe it dry, it should not be dripping any lubricant. The starter gear engages when it pops out to meet up with the large disc cog called the driveface, which is what the drive belt presses up against.

Check 2 things.

1. Check the starter gear, it should feel springy without binding. If it does bind, spray some brake cleaner and try to clean it as it might have debris and other foreign junk in the small nooks and crannies. Then, check the teeth of the starter gear assembly. If you find any missing teeth, it must be replaced.

2. Check the teeth condition on the driveface. If any of the teeth are missing, smaller than the others, or broken off, that explains why it would only appear to start every now and then. When the starter gear contacts those abnormal teeth, it cannot spin the driveface to start the motor. If the driveface has damaged teeth or is missing teeth and you intend on only using the electric start, that driveface must be replaced.

Suggestion: If you intend on keeping your moped for a while, I'd invest in restoring your kickstart capability.

Thanks for advice about starter clutch. I have examined the fuctioning of this thing by supporting it with the cover off and it seems the cogged wheel on the starter clutch doesnt "pop" out far enough. The larger cogged wheel on the motor is tight and is far back as possible on the shaft. The belt, coggs and c/clutch move smoothly when I turn turn with a spanner.

When I press the starter 9.999 times out of 10 all I get is a whirring noise then it might engage and turn over the motor. I am in 2 minds to try to get a kick start kit as the pal had nothing but a hole in the cover when I got it....

Thanks for your time and trouble anyway.

i have the same issue with my 89 elite E - the starter gear has a ton of grease on it, and does not have a good spring to it. I have to manually pull out the mating gear of the starter gear shaft to the drive gear to make contact.

i'll try the cleaning technique

Low battery can do that, try jump starting it.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Kenny is right. A low battery can cause the starter to turn slow, hence the starter can NOT throw the bendix like it is suppose to.
