Say fellas, why didn't anyone suggest this:
Well the Dio has the nice slick JDM-style lights in back, why not throw $50 at VT and get a "Japanese" taillight set, like I got with the scratched out Kymco bag? The best way to avoid those lights is to replace them.

Greetings:

Got any pics of the Japanese tail-light installation? Koko's son (Igor  ) says he's got the pipe done and I'll pick up tomorrow. Mounting and pics to follow.

Igor Comes Through!

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Just retrieved JW pipe from Igor. Nice clean weld with 1 pinhole. Cosmetically better than OK.

Sound is very little louder than V8, at least at idle or throttle-blip. Sick kid sleeping precluded any performance testing for now.

Igor-Modded JW Chamber Installed

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Got around to installing and light-duty testing this afternoon. One unforseen issue was the absence of any sort of bumper for the centerstand, which is now free to swing back and make contact between the right stand leg and the sidewall of the "big" Pirelli 90/90. Nothing a wedge of some sort won't resolve for now.

The pipe is noticeably louder than the YWS V8 28mm it replaces under power. Certainly no low-end issues to date. Full-throttle testing will have ot wait until Sunday afternon.

Any cool info about the inside of the pipe? Would have been a good time to inspect, unless there is nothing inside and the shape tells it all.

Some zip ties, electrical tape, a couple more zip ties, etc. is keeping my stand from hitting :P How far out to the side does it sit? We need those aerodynamics

If it's stainless, not sure if Midas can help you, but there is a welding shop near you that can. I can feel it.
FYI ---->

There are actually two types of stainless steel and the type used in automotive exhaust systems is in fact, magnetic.

Automotive exhausts typically use 400 series Ferritic (usually 409) which is basically Iron with some Nickel and a very small amount of Chrome. The lower nickel and chrome content make the material much easier to form or draw...(catalytic converter shells & exhaust tubing). The exposed surfaces will rust over time, but rarely will it rust through.

The other type...300 series Austenitic is not magnetic and contains mostly Nickel and Chrome with very little iron. This is the stuff kitchen sinks, surgical instruments and kitchen flatware are made of.

Austenitic is by far the prettier of the two types and because of the way it looks, may very well be what that pipe is made of. After all it is basically a flat sheet that has been roll-formed into a tube.

Not trying to be a smart *......just wanted to clear that point up and thought it may be of trivial interest to someone.

(I try to make a living by selling the stuff) :thumbwink:

Trivial Pursuits

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Considering the fact that we're all spending an inordinate amount of time discussing how to wring out top performance from obsolete 2-stroke scooters, your information is not "trivial" at all. Good stuff, Groovy! I'll try the magnet test for grins.

The chamber is a hollow cigar-shaped, uh... chamber. I ran it up in chilly Deepinnaharts. I have another, unrelated warm-up issue yet to resolve, but once the mill was taking throttle, it was at least as fast accelerating as the V8 but also noticeably louder.

Jetting to JW's Chamber

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

I was using a 150 in the Mikuni 24, which was a bit rich with my current setup. I decided to keep it in. Not that I have any choice; it's the biggest Mik jet I own right now. The temps stay below 350 (long story about this gauge in cold weather reading high...) so I'm still pretty close.

It ran 55 this afternoon and that's without lightening up the rollers. LOUD with a twist: there's a resonant Ba-ba-ba-ba in harmony with the wail of the pipe at 9500+RPM with the throttle open. I have no idea what that's about, but it feels *-for-strong. My V8 pipe is on eBay.
