Does your Spree/Elite already run great, and you're trying to make it quicker/faster? Need a monster motor swap? Discuss your ideas here.

'85 Aero. Was doing the passing, now is being passed.

Post by Buzzingbee89 »

Hey guys,
When my dad first purchased this scooter, it was fast. About maybe a year and a half ago i had the speedometer pegged at 40mph. Now it struggles to do 30. It does however have a gutted exhaust on it. I'm not sure if this would have something to do with it or not. The piston rings are fairly new, maybe two years old. It blows blue smoke when you first start it up. Any ideas on what my problem could be and if so what can I do to fix it? Thanks!

Did the problem start when you gutted the exhaust?

Greetings:

Presuming you didn't further modify the scooter here; lots can change in a year.
1. Air filter clogged, spark plug going iffy. Clean and replace, respectively.
2. You didn't indicate the mileage accrued, but simple wear can gradually erode an engine's compression. Easiest diagnostic test to perform with an $8 Harbor Freight gauge.
3. Now it gets to be more work. Carbon buildup in the exhaust port, muffler, occasionally the cylinder head needs to be cleaned out.
4. If you're a teenager and put on 10" in height and 80 lbs. of weight, that'll slow you down some. Pump up the tires to sidewall maximum rating and avoid the Supersize... That alone won't slow you down 10 MPH, so see 1, 2, and 3.
5. Didn't think of the comment in the post below this, but Yupp! (<Edited by WM)

Good luck!

i know its a variated motor, but i'm wondering if maybe the belt being worn could cause decrease in power(the way it does on spree's)

Yea the problem started after put the gutted exhaust on there. I did do a compression test on it today and it barely pushed 50psi. Then I realized it was cold, DUH! I took the exhaust off and checked the port and it wasn't clogged at all, a few spots but nothing major. Look the amount of feedback on this site!
