Larger Tire Size Question
Pardon the noob question, but when I read about a larger rear tire helping with speed gains, does this mean just to mount a large diameter tire on the stock Elite rim, or does this mean an entire tire and wheel swap?? Thanks.

Re: Larger Tire Size Question
Greetings:
You can mount a 90/90
on the stock 1.85 rim and perhaps even a 3.50. However those tires are designed for wider 2.15" or larger rims. With their beads squeezed down so close together, the 1.85s make the bigger tires' profiles look a bit baloony and adds a bit of side-to-side floppiness. The 1.85s also decrease the width of the contact patch on the tarmac, sort of defeating the purpose.
On the plus side, the tires do squeeze out a bit taller for lower "gear" ratio, and the ride is cushier.
If you prefer better grip over those attractions, fortunately the 2.15 rear Metropolitan rims bolt straight up to Aeros and later. These rims are safe to run tubeless too. Not so the Elite rims. The front Mets bolt on to '94-later Elites with 95mm brake panel. With that panel, they also fit Aero and early Elites.
Some brands of 3.50s can rub the crankcase and/or centerstand. The 90/90s have fewer issues. All must be deflated to install, then re-inflated.
Good luck!

Re: Larger Tire Size Question
Anybody start a list of what 90/90 and what 3.5/10 tires fit and don't rub without modification?
Thanks.
Thanks.
