I don't know about your scooter, but mine has a NUT on the crankshaft and secondary shaft.

Yeah I am talking about the nut that holds the flywheel on, I just don't want to screw up the threads on my crank

I might be a NUT, but my scooter wears NUTs ( :naughty: ) in those locations as well.

Don't know about the tool for removing them until you try, just be carefull with the impact on sensative crank shaft threads and all. No easier way to screw up a crank than banging away with an impact gun on cross threaded nuts or an improperly seated drive face starter cog.

When you use an impact like this on a pressed together crank, you need to use a strap wrench to hold the flywheel so the impacts are not transferred to the crank itself.

DONT USE IT! I've trashed the threads on my crankshaft after only a couple of times! It was a new crankshalft as well. :(

I now only use a oil fiter grip to hold it and a wrench to get the nut off and tighten.

Its not advisable to tighten the nut using an impact wrench. So if you're not tightening there's little danger to damaging the thread. The real danger is causing a shift in the crank counterweight as its only pressure fit to the crank. I advise using a torque wrench to tighten to spec. If you don't have one and don't have too much cash handy check out ones on sale at Harbor Freight.

I use an impact wrench to remove difficult nuts and as Bear wisely states:

- its a good idea to hold the flywheel tight when using one.

I used to use impact wrenches to tear down engines all the time (it's what I did for a living), but assembly was ALWAYS done with hand tools and torque wrenches. I have always used a strap wrench or a flywheel holder on any flywheel whether taking apart or assembling.

NEVER EVER USE AN IMPACT WRENCH FOR ASSEMBLING ANYTHING!

I use a snap on air powered impact gun to remove Crank and clutch nuts.

My 14.4V cordless drill has torque settings on it so you do not over tighten bolts.

I use it all the time to put clutch bells back on.

I always start the nuts by hand though. Would not want to cross thread and ruin stuff.

Yeah, I've seen those torque setting wrenches and would never trust them. God created torque wrenches to tighten nuts and bolts to spec.

Are you guys talking about when removing the nut that holds the front drive face pulley on?

Yup.. I've stripped the threads on the cranksaft from using a impact wrench and i was carefull each time doing it not to hold the button in longer then a sec or 2 when i've used it. Only removed it maybe 3-4 times and that was all it needed to trash the threads. New crank mind you.

I've also used the impact wrench on the rear wheel and was freaked out about it.. but that nut was so freakin tight there was no other way.

Best way i've found now is to use a oil filter wrench.. a large one.. cant remember the size now but i think it was over 4". Got it at Auto Zone.

Just use that to grab the teeth and then put a wrench on the nut to tighten or loosen it.

You mean use the strap wrench on the teeth of the front pulley so that isolates the crank from getting shocked by the impact?

I don't use the impact to put those nuts on, but I use them to take the nuts off, and i just want to understand what technique you guys are using to avoid this "pressed on crank" screwing up the counter weight thing.
